Arntzen: 3 Generations In Jazz
"Bad Lake Big Apple"
[Excerpts from the booklet]
I'm always wondering how we could get more support from local folks for these little-guy causes being fought in the nooks and cracks of this big city. Like any responsible musician would, I suggested a party.
I told them we're called Bad Lake, named after the prairie salt marsh where my dad grew up. I said we'd play my dad's folk songs and other tunes, with three generations of the Arntzen family on stage.
They all said "yeah!" at the same time. So we got the street permit and went door to door handing out home-made flyers and posters. We closed the block, built a stage, set up a lemonade stand with cookies and t-shirts for sale, and set up a hundred chairs right on the street. We were praying there'd be enough people come to fill them, and to eat all the cookies the ladies made. We hung a sky-blue tarp over the stage, lashed from fire escape to fire escape, in case it rained. It was blowing and billowing in the wind like a giant blue flag in the middle of Cornelia Street. We figured we'd play for an hour.
Within 15 minutes of starting the first song, there were 200 people. Five minutes later, there were 400. By the half hour mark you couldn't see to the end of the block, jammed with heads and shoulders all over the place. Bad Lake rocked the street with one turbo-charged song after another. The applause was more and more deafening the longer we played: the crowd grew minute by minute. Before you know it, we left the stage amid tumultuous applause in a hail of blood, sweat and tears. We didn't know until that moment that we'd just played for two and a half hours, non-stop. It felt like 5 seconds.
...So that's what we did one summer day in the city, in 2005. Two nights later, we played over at the Living Room, on the Lower East Side. We recorded the show, and then went out for dinner afterwards with family and friends. The music we played that night is on this record, the same songs we had played on Cornelia Street.

Arntzen: 3 Generations In Jazz
"Live At The Cellar"
There are many strange events taking place all over the world in these days of change. These are the times when the simple things in life seem to take on more meaning, perhaps more than ever before. Family is one of those simple things, and this recording is about three generations of a Canadian musical family coming together after long and separate journeys apart.
It all happened under the teeming stars one hot night in a small nightclub in the heart of the beautiful city of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. And it happened for all the right reasons, with folks and all the relatives traveling from far and wide. From B.C., New York, London, and the icy lands of northern Norway, they came.
The family had come together for the love, and the thankfulness, and deep appreciation, that somewhere, somehow, someone forever dear had invented...New Orleans Jazz.
Yes, jazz. This story begins in a little unpainted ranch house on the bald Saskatchewan prairie on September 19th, 1927 with the birth of Lloyd Arntzen, who apparently knew right away what to do, as the faint melodies of "Brother Can You Spare A Dime?" could be heard in his sweet baby wail.
And now, 77 wonderful years later, Lloyd is joined onstage by sons and grandsons, musicians all, and it seems the story has just begun.
It's notable enough when two generations in one family appear on stage together, but it1s unusual for three to be in the same ensemble. Music is in the Arntzen blood, passed on from father to child to the grandchild: in this case, through sons Leif and Tom, and two grandsons, Miles and Evan.

Lloyd Arntzen
"Where The Coho Flash Silver"
Clarinetist, soprano saxophonist and vocalist Lloyd Arntzen has been arranging, playing and researching vintage jazz from the '20s and '30s for four decades. The style's continuing survival in Greater Vancouver owes a lot to the elder Arntzen. He founded the Jazz Band Society in 1958 and the series of jazz band balls he started helped create the Hot Jazz Club. Lloyd is a regular fixture on the traditional jazz scene in the Lower Mainland as leader of The Red Onion Rhythm Kings, and as feature soloist with Sweet Papa Lowdown and Dixieland Express. he has played with Pete Fountain, Clark Terry, Chris Barber, and Bob Wilber. Lloyd is a respect songwriter, and the title track from his album "Where The Coho Flash Silver" is sung by generations of B.C. schoolchildren.

Tom Arntzen
"The Turning"
On his debut jazz CD, The Turning, Tom Arntzen evokes a spirit of playful innocence. The combination of Tom's inspired songwriting, rich vocals and masterful piano playing is stunning. This is an artist at the peak of his creativity offering 9 original jazz tunes and 4 standards. Tom is joined by some of Canada's finest jazz musicians playing in the styles of Chet Baker and Nat King Cole. Producer Simon Kendall added his unique touch and the result is an album of compelling freshness coupled with exceptional musicianship.

The Leif Arntzen Band
"tlab"
In the end, all that remained from the beginning was Leif's melody. We let microphones into the basement to capture the sound just as it was...the search for a still point between improvisation and song...over tea and chocolate...captured also...echoes of early versions floating harmlessly through the air...like slowly passing by the scene of an accident. Distant enough to feel safe...close enough to remind us of the sweetness of the journey. Leif: trumpet/vocals, Keith: guitar/vocals, Vito: drums, Will: acoustic bass.
A word about the pricing of "tlab":
The "tlab" record is priced higher than other records because it is entirely handmade in every sense, and the added quality simply costs more. The cardboard outerjacket and fine tarpaper inner jacket covers were handcut. The CD sleeves and photos were hand assembled using photographic album mounting corners. We tried to put the same personal care and attention into the making of the record packaging as we put into the writing and making of the music contained on the CD. - tlab

Leif Arntzen
"I Love You"
I'm half Norwegian, half Welsh, plus all Canadian. Now I'm becoming American. In my world, I always liked songs that said something about your life, made you feel good, let you be sad for moment, let you feel something maybe you've been missing. Songs are religion, and I go to them every day for something good. This record is music I've written about what I'm thinking...just a bunch of songs...a window into some other place... Leif.

The Leif Arntzen Band
"Channeling Chet"
I love listening to Chet Baker's recordings. They're so full of beautiful music...his playing and singing sound so good...I learned so much. So the band wanted to dig some of this vibe...and so we wrote a continuous piece that weaves in and out of this wonderful music...to pay tribute to Chet's work, and somehow make the music our own too... Leif.

Sacred Hearts
"Turn The Earth"
The band was formed by four brothers from the Arntzen family...Leif (vocals, trumpet, guitar), Trevor (vocals, bass), Tom (vocals, keyboards), and Arnt (drums, percussion). They got together in 1990 in a basement for six months and wrote these songs. Then they toured around British Columbia for six months in their own truck, doing their own sound and lighting...and this is the record they made from that time...

Leif Arntzen
"Conscious Mind"
When Leif returned to New York in 1991 after the Sacred Hearts project, he was asked to write and record a rock album for an East Coast label...and Conscious Mind was born. The record has contributions from members of the E Street band, the Pointer Sisters, Eric Sanko of Skeleton Key, as well as Ron Saikle, Mary Guzzi, Freddy Shahadi, and a host of other artists who were around at the time. The record went unreleased and unheard until now...

Leif Arntzen
"Eventide"
From 1993 through 1995 Leif played out in every little
cafe/nightclub/house in the New York area. Sometimes solo, sometimes with bass acompaniment. This recording was done in producer/bassist Neill Furio's living room in New York over a long weekend. The recording catches Leif at a quiet personal moment...just playing and singing songs in the same simple way they had grown...
